What does GOTS certified mean?

Updated: Nov 6, 2022

You may have seen on our store that the pieces are GOTS certified. But what does it actually mean?

The GOTS certification is seen as the gold standard in the textile industry ensuring that the piece is sustainably produced throughout the supply chain. It is based on two main pillars: to reduce the ecological impact and to improve working conditions.

Reducing the ecological impact

When a garment is GOTS certified, it means that it has been produced under strict rules: the use of organic fibers, strict rules on chemical inputs and a controlled water waste treatment. These steps are crucial to ensure that the textile production's impact is kept to a minimum.

Why does it matter?

Use of organic fibers

This rule bans the use of pesticides that pollute the soil and water.

Strict rules on chemical inputs

Harmful chemicals are usually used in the fabrication process. These chemicals are dangerous for the environment, garment workers and consumers. By purchasing a GOTS certified product, you can be ensured that your product is free of the chemicals mentioned above.

Waste water treatment

The treatment ensures that the water used during the fabrication process is cleaned before being released in water streams.

Improve working conditions

For a long time, the fast-fashion industry has been exploiting garment workers in developing countries to produce high volumes at a low price. To achieve that, workers are usually on a small salary, below the living wage. Also, forced and child labour are common. To reduce costs, the working spaces are not maintained and unsafe. Excessive overtime is frequent.

With a GOTS certification, the consumer can be sure that the garments have not been produced under the conditions mentioned above.

Conclusion

By purchasing a GOTS certified product, you are actively voting with your money for a more sustainable textile production ensuring a reduced environmental impact and improved working conditions throughout the entire supply chain.
